WORLD OF CHILDREN – WORLD OF CREATIVITY Saint-Petersburg City Palace of Youth Creativity is the biggest institution of non-formal education in Russian Federation and in Europe which occupies 114 buildings and has territory with total area 313 065 km2. Our Palace opened its' doors for children in 1937 and was called The Leningrad Pioneers’ Palace. The heart of the Palace is the Anichkov manor, former residence of Russian Emperors, with monuments of architecture of VIII-XIX centuries such as the Anichkov Palace with its splendid interiors, Service building, building of the Cabinet. There is a beautiful garden and a modern concert hall Carnival with two auditoriums for 815 and 140 seats located on the same territory, where different activities such as national and international festivals and other youth meetings can be organized. It is esteemed and acknowledged by the citizens of St. Petersburg. From generation to generation they bring their children to the Palace. Each child can develop his or her talents, managerial abilities and abilities to work in group. About 16 000 young citizens of St. Petersburg come to the Palace to take classes in more than 1054 hobby-groups and clubs. Every young citizen of St. Petersburg can find a great variety of activities according to his/her taste. The following clubs and hobby groups are opened for children and youth: club for students of local lore Petropol, clubs for young tourists, club for young geologists named after Vladimir Obruchev, Ballroom dances club Rhythm, the Dunaevsky ensemble of songs and dances, theatre-studio Metamorphoses, musical-variety theatre-studio Joke, symphony and brass-band orchestras, folk instruments orchestra and bayan orchestra, choirs Drops, Young Generation, concert choir, Theatre of Youth Creativity, puppet Theatre Dolls, literary club Daring, Anichkov Lyceum, club for language studies Friendship, computer technologies centre, naval club Sea cadet, photographic studio Silhouette, laboratories for technical creative activities, visual art studio, Children Design Centre, sport schools of the Olympic reserve, club for social studies , press-centre Generation, club of young cosmonauts named after German Titov, multimedia studio M-Art, ecological and biological center Krestovky with school medical department, laboratory of botany, research laboratories of animal ecology and sea benthos, flower design studio (opened in 2007 on the territory of 1,5 hectares on the picturesque Krestovsky Island). Demands of the citizens are the main guiding line for opening new clubs and creating up-to-date extra-school education curricula. Many of our creative groups are well-known not only in the city but also in different regions of Russia and other countries of the world. INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION Within the last 10 years our students have been to 33 countries. Every year they take part in different international festivals, competitions and sporting events. They gain awards, get diplomas, medals for participation in international, all-Russian, city competitions, contests, exhibitions and conferences. Since 1996 St. Petersburg City Palace of Youth Creativity is an active member of European Association of Leisure Time Institutions for Children and Youth (EAICY). There are 60 institutions of non-formal education from 16 countries of Western, Central and Eastern Europe. Being a member of the Association, the Palace stimulates full and overall development of children and youth, carries out projects and programs for leisure time activities, maintains bilateral and multilateral youth cooperation, develops scientific and research activity on the issues of non-formal education in Europe. St. Petersburg City Palace not only represents the field of non-formal education of the city, but also coordinates cooperation between member-institutions from Eastern Europe. HOLIDAYS, CONCERTS, COMPETITIONS Every year about 300000 young Petersburgers take part in different activities. Children creative groups are actively involved in everyday life of St. Petersburg. None of the big events can be organized without them. It became a good tradition to have concerts on the best stages of the city such as Concert Hall Oktyabrsky, exhibitions of young painters in the Central Exhibition Hall Manege and Artists Trade Union, to take part in the parade of brass-band orchestras. Different city actions such as on the Piskarevskoye memorial cemetery unite thousands of children of St. Petersburg. More than 5000 schoolchildren of St. Petersburg take part in different competitions in school subjects carried out by the St. Petersburg City Palace of Youth Creativity. About 25000 children take part in sport events in orienteering, gymnastics, box, big tennis, chess and checkers, fencing, organized by sport schools of the Palace. Being organizational, research and coordinating centre, St. Petersburg City Palace of Youth Creativity actively cooperates with institutions of non-formal education from all districts of St. Petersburg. Experience gained by the pedagogues of the Palace is really unique. Our colleagues from different regions of Russia and abroad come here to take part in seminars, conferences and workshops. For more than 5 years St. Petersburg City Palace of Youth Creativity has been an organizer of the all-Russian competition among pedagogues of non-formal education “I give my heart to children”. One of the most important guidelines of our work is an active support of children unions, organizations and movements which develop social responsibility and initiative. More than 40 thousand children are members of different youth associations (NGOs) such as The Union of Young Petersburgers, Young Generation for the Revival of Petersburg, ecological movement EcoShield. Traditionally we organize festival of the youth press, city contest among youth leaders, action Present to a soldier. Children take care of the monuments and memorials, help restorers, organize monitoring of the environment. The Sailing ship Young Sailor of the Baltic Sea, with the tonnage of 441 tons, took part in the international regatta “Cutty Sark Tall Ships’ Races” for several times. The crew of the ship, including young sailors, is 52 people. WE INFORM, PUBLISH AND TRAIN St. Petersburg City Palace of Youth Creativity publish various editions on actual pedagogical problems, civil education, creative development of children as well as research works of its pedagogues and teachers from other educational institutions. On the Internet portal, coordinated by the Palace, it is possible to find any kind of information about activities of all institutions of non-formal education of St. Petersburg. Children of the Palace have their own publications such as newspaper Generation, scientific and research journal Anichkov Bulletin, annual collections of poems and stories Muses at the Fontanka, annual collections of research works Heirs of the Great City, Family trees of St. Petersburg schoolchildren. THE PALACE ALL YEAR ROUND! All year round more than 7500 children continue their studying, coaching, rehearsals and have rest. 2000 children go on hiking; participate in archaeological, geological and biological expeditions and periodical trainings. In 2003 St. Petersburg City Palace of Youth Creativity became a prize-winner in the First all-Russian contest among institutions of non-formal education. THEY HELP TO REACH SUCCESS Today, 560 tutors work with children in the Palace. Among them 47 PhD, Honoured coaches of Russia, Honoured artist of Russia, Honoured cultural workers of Russian Federation, masters of sports and members of various creative unions. OUR PRIDE We are very proud of our graduates. During the 70 years history of the Palace a lot of them have become world famous professors, public figures, actors, sportsmen, businessmen and politicians. Natalia Behtereva and Ludwig Faddeev, Tatiana Doronina and Kirill Lavrov, Georgy Grechko and Mark Tajmanov, Elena Obraztsova and Andrej Petrov are well known to every Petersburger and every Russian. Studios and clubs of the Palace were attended by such prominent people as Diana Vishneva, the soloist of the Mariinsky theatre; actor Nikolay Fomenko; Hero of Russia, aquanaut Anatoly Hramov and three times world checkers champion Alexandr Georgiev. The doors of St. Petersburg City Palace of Youth Creativity are hospitably opened not only for children. We are glad to welcome our former students, friends, leaders of St. Petersburg, outstanding people. We are happy to meet all people who are indifferent to the world of children! In 2005 Board of Trustees was set up as a body of state and public administration of St. Petersburg City Palace of Youth Creativity.
The Palace is an integral part of educational, social and cultural space of St. Petersburg. Its’ cooperation with other educational institutions, different institutions of culture and science, city authorities, mass-media enriches and develops educational process. One of the main aims of such collaboration is to engage leading experts of St. Petersburg in work with talented children.
